From the cradle to upper-secondary final examination

From Råshult to Växjö

It usually upholds that many artists and writers lives on their experiences from their childhoods and grow up times . Probably, you can say that although about scientist.

Linné tells that he already in his tender age inhale the fragrances in his fathers garden and the whole of his narrative are sweept in a happy flower mist. It is not wrong to mean that he already so early started education to be one of the worlds most wellknown botanist.

The father Nils Linnaeus, Vicar in the parish of Stenbrohult, was through his big plant interest Carl´s first teacher.

"Carl were raised in beauty, fragrance and pleasure. His toys were flowers”. From Florence Caddy:“Through the fields with Linnaeus".
In the year 1714, when Carl was seven years old, the twenty-year old Johan Telander was employed as informator in the parsonage of Stenbrohult. Linné described later Telander as “a morose man with bad temperament, as was more devoted to turn down a childs talent than developing them”.

The school in Växjö which was called "trivialschool" might 1717 take Carl Linnaeus as pupil. The school was completed built only two years earlier and still exists in central Växjö, with the cathedral as nearest neighbor and is known by the name "Carolinerhuset".

As curiosity can be mentioned that it took 125 years before the obligation to attend school is introduced in Sweden.

Here, he might be living an insufficient life as intrinsic and enjoyed neither the school orthe actual school work. He failured often to go out to experience and to discover the nature in the environment of Växjö.

It was only during Christmas and summer holidays that he might be seeing his family and his loved Stenbrohult

Karolinerhuset owns by National Property Board and stands today unused. .
Carl was a high mediocre pupil but succeeded to take himself through the "trivialschool", a school that in front had as aim to educate priest matters. Theology and latin was the most important disciplines on the schedule. Despite scant grades succeeded, the seventeen years old Carl, come in to the upper secondary school. Perhaps, Nils Linnaeus acquaintance with the headmaster, Daniel Lannerus, had some impact.

Headmaster Lannerus himself had a botanic interest and took Carl under his wings. He presented him into doctor Johan Rothman, medical doctor and teacher on the upper secondary school.

Dr. Rothman became directly very delighted in Carl and he become to be very important for the young student with his passion to the botanic. He interested Linnaeus for medical studies, that on this time also included botany, that of course was good for Linné.

The parents on the other hand, were of another opinion. Carl should become a priest man. To support for the alternative medicine studies, comes Josias Cederhielm, earl on the farmhouse Möckelsnäs, into the picture. He convinced Nils Linnaeus and thereby Carls future was marked out.

The upper secondary school in Växjö emphasized on that time the matters Greek, hebrew, theology, metaphysical (the learning about the sense of life) and rhetoric (eloquence). Nothing of this interested Carl, but he does extremly well done in nature competence and mathematic.

Moreover, he learned to speak latin well, that was each times English in learned circles. During Carls last year on the upper secondary school Rothman offered him that he, on private basis, without some costs will teaches him in botany and fhysiology.

Father Nils said yes in all huminity and Carl might live as a son in the house of Rothman. The life became now very pleasant for him.

At the admissions of autumn 1727, travelled the twenty year old Carl to Lund to enter himself at the university. Study time in Stenbrohult and Växjö were finished. But Carl Linnaeus left a fantastic memory of himself. On country library in Växjö they kept his earliest well-known script – Carls hand typed örtabok from upper secondary school.
You can see örtaboken digitaly here on internet!

Linnaeus 171-sides örtabok is kept today on country library in Växjö. It is unfamiliar how it be placed there.
