Carl von Linné

Father Nils was a priest, but had horti-culture as hobby.Linné will therefore early became interested in the nature. Despite this, he still wanted to become to be a priest and go in his fathers footprints. But Linné truanted from the teachings and goes out in the nature instead. The teachers lost the patience and tell his father Nils. Lately Linné retypes the event “Senior masters… with unanimous vote fortified Father, it is time to send your son to some workman, as they were convinced that he with the Book nothing could perform.”

At the time when Linné was living it was usual that someone who is studying to be a priest took himself a new name, delicate than the original. The new name could be a latin form of the name on somethingfrom the home district, as the native village or the family farm. What is then the origin to the name Linnæus/Linné?

Well, two uncles of Linné´s father took themselves the name Tiliander when they, who have been simple sons to a farmer, were going to study to be priests. They got the idea because there was an old tree, a powerful lime-tree, at the boundary to their farm and the farm in Jonsboda in Vittaryd village in Småland.

Lime-tree is called Tilia in latin. When Linné´s father Nils Ingemarsson was going to study to be a priest he followed his relatives examples and took himself the nameafter the powerful lime-tree, but he preferred to take the Swedish word lime-tree and convert it so it sounds like Latin - Linnæus. The old lime-tree is still existing, however in a little bit poor condition.
