The apostles of Carl von Linné

After Linné´s death it became popular to call themselfes “Linnédisciples”. Some did it without pertinent reasons. Modern research says that he had about 600 apostles. It was them who defended a dissertation during Linné, participated at his lectures, were partipaced at the “Flowerkings” domestic research travels or were inscribed by Linné at the medical faculty in Uppsala.

Drawing of Fibben Hald from the book “I naturens rike”
Those disciples, that were sent out over the big seas to study distante nations nature and ethnology, Linné called his “apostles”. It´s been mention for the first time 1750, nine years after that he´s been appointed to professor publicus Upsaliensis. The number of apostles is counted to seventeen people, some became more successful than other. Their journey destination was recommended by Linné, but the decision to do the journey were their own. Linné gave them all the help he could, in certain case also travel cash. Most journeys were via an agreement with "Svenska Ostindiska Kompaniet", about a free place on the boats for a doctor or a priest. The apostles visited America, Africa, Asia, Australia and Oceania. Some did sailings around the world.
To travel at this time was dangerous. Horrible hardship and fatal diseases was threated them. Several of apostles never came home again. Two examples by this were Forsskål and Löfling, which were two of Linnés most gifted and promising researchers. Their to early deaths was mourned deeply of him.

Back home in Uppsala, Carl von Linné sat impatient awaiting of life signs from his apostles. It could be in a sort of travel reports, consignments with collected materials or one apostles homecoming.

He was like a spider in center of his net, while the apostles were travelling around and go through andempty and returned with the exchange. There are no doubts, that without the apostles wholeheartedand loyal initiatives, wouldn´t Linné be the world most well-known botany he certainly is.

Scientists belongs often to one or two categories: those which detects or those which creates systematic. Carl von Linné was a specialist within both and thereby unique within naturalhistory.
